Before the digital / Internet revolution acquiring traditional
distribution was mandatory for making new releases available to the
general public. Placing
CD’s into brick & mortar retail outlets was the only way to
accomplish this to any significant degree, especially if an artist’s
goal was to become a nationally known recording artist.
Obtaining this type of distribution has always required convincing a
distributor that the label in question had serious promotional and
marketing strategies and the necessary financing to create public
awareness and interest in a particular release.
There’s an old record industry saying that still applies
today – The label creates the demand; the distributor fulfills that
demand.
Thanks to modern technologies it is now possible to bypass
traditional distribution and still have new releases be available
for purchase via the Internet, either as CD’s or as Downloads.
This does not mean that brick & mortar retailers are no
longer necessary, especially if the artist is touring and wants to
have a visible presence in the markets where they are playing.
Regardless the type of distribution, traditional or digital, having
the recordings available to the public is only a small portion of
the battle. The biggest
challenge will always be creating the public interest and demand
necessary to translate into significant sales.
